Why I Can't Watch "What About Bob?" (But Might Need To)

I hate the movie “What About Bob?”.

Hate it.

Loathe it.

Many people love this movie. I normally love 90’s movies (and over-quote them, as you may have noticed in previous posts).

But as a therapist, the thought of a client crashing my vacation, inserting himself into every moment with my family, and turning my holiday into one extended counseling session, makes me cringe at every turn.

I love Bill Murray, but I can’t watch this movie.

—But dammit, I can’t just throw the whole thing in the trash, either.

It has one redeeming quality:

“Baby Steps.”

The therapist on vacation is celebrating the publication of his new book, “Baby Steps”. This is the concept that if you focus on the very next, tiny, doable step toward your goals, and you’ll get there before you know it.

I want that book. No— I wish I’d written that book.

No— the book doesn’t need to exist, because the whole point is in the title (sort of like other popular business books like “Start With Why” and “The One Thing.” Guess what? If you know your “Why” and you focus on One Thing at a time, you’ll do better in business. I just saved you $40 at the bookstore. You’re welcome).

A lot of the people I coach are perfectionists (takes one to know one). They make huge, dreamy goals, but they get stuck in inertia, because their perfectionism makes the dream feel impossible. It becomes a HUGE project; it feels unachievable.

You know what gets them moving?

Baby steps.

Think of a place you’re feeling stuck in your business. What’s a project you’ve been putting off? What’s something you need to do, but it scares you?

What’s the very next, tiny, itsy-bitsy baby step you can take towards getting that done?

Now do it.
