One Of The Best Inventions Of All Time (And...FOR Your Time):

Think of the ONE next thing you need to get done in your business that keeps just… not getting done.

Don't worry about why it's not happening. No need to go into a shame-spiral about it, or waste energy beating up on yourself about it.

It can be something big, or just one of those little tiny items that stays on the To Do list indefinitely.

OK, got your item/task? You can even write it down.

Great. Now:

Go to your calendar, or open up your digital schedule (or even better, do both), and give yourself a deadline.

As John Carlton said, the Best Invention of All Time isn't the wheel, it's the deadline. (It's the reason other inventions actually came about!).

Feeling resistant to putting it on the calendar in ink? (I get it; commitment is hard). Grab a mini-post-it note and write it there, then you can shift the post it note if you absolutely must.  Even a “soft” deadline can help.

One Of The Best Inventions Of All Time (And...FOR Your Time):

Want to take it a step further? Tell a friend (or, ahem, your Business Coach) to shore up your commitment level.

I know this idea is so, so simple, and yet it's one that few solopreneurs use enough.

I've even thought to myself, “Deadlines are overrated," then remembered sprinting across campus, in a snowstorm, to get a paper on my college professor's desk at 4:58 before 5pm deadline.

We're out of college, and no longer getting grades on these things, but deadlines can still work as a psychological tool. (I use them with coaching clients all the time. Clients know I'll never punish/shame them for missing the goal, but setting a deadline together still works).

I've got TIME on the brain lately, so I'll be sharing more of my favorite tips for increasing time and productivity in upcoming posts.

In the meantime, feel free to share your goal & deadline with me in the comments… and think about how good you're going to feel after that nagging task is no longer waiting in the wings!
